Why do we Celebrate Guru Purnima?

‘Guru Purnima’ is a Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist festival that celebrates the guru-shishya (teacher-student) tradition. It is observed on the full moon day in the month of Ashadha, which typically falls in July.

Meaning:

The word "guru" comes from the Sanskrit words "gu" meaning "darkness" and "ru" meaning "to dispel." A guru is therefore someone who dispels the darkness of ignorance and brings light to the student's path. Gurus can be spiritual teachers, but they can also be any kind of teacher who helps us to learn and grow.

Significance:

Guru Purnima is a day to honor and thank our gurus for their guidance and wisdom. It is also a day to reflect on the importance of learning and education. In many cultures, Guru Purnima is celebrated with a puja (offering) to the guru, as well as with prayers, meditation, and other spiritual practices.

On this day, we reflect upon the teachings and wisdom bestowed upon us by our gurus. We remember the valuable lessons they have shared, the encouragement they have given, and the support they have provided. Guru Purnima is a reminder to nurture the seeds of knowledge planted within us and to continue our journey of learning and growth.
