Date of Operation: May 7, 2025
Duration: 25 minutes
Targeted Locations: 9 key terrorist camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK)
Casualties: Approximately 50 terrorists neutralized

Operation Sindoor, conducted on May 7, 2025, marked a pivotal military action by India against terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). This operation was a direct response to the brutal Pahalgam terror attack, which occurred on April 22, 2025, claiming the lives of 26 innocent civilians, including one Nepalese national. The deadly attack was orchestrated by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and its immediate impact on the tourism sector and communal peace in Jammu & Kashmir prompted India to take decisive action.

In a landmark press briefing following the operation, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, and Colonel Sophia Qureshi addressed the media. Notably, this was the first time two women officers were at the forefront of such a high-profile briefing, symbolizing India’s resolve in combating terrorism and sending a powerful message of unity.

Background: The Pahalgam Terror Attack

On April 22, 2025, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists, along with other Pakistan-trained operatives, carried out a barbaric attack on Indian tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir. The victims were executed with extreme brutality, including headshots in front of their families. This attack was aimed at derailing the growth of the region’s tourism sector, which had witnessed a record 23 million tourists in the previous year. The terrorists sought to undermine the normalization efforts in Jammu & Kashmir and provoke communal discord.

The group that claimed responsibility for the attack, The Resistance Front (TRF), operates as a front for LeT. India had already provided inputs regarding the TRF’s terrorist activities to the UN 1267 Sanctions Committee. The attack was part of Pakistan’s longstanding strategy to perpetuate cross-border terrorism aimed at destabilizing India.
