In a historic move that’s set to redefine higher education in India, the University of Southampton, one of the UK's top institutions, has opened its first overseas campus in Gurgaon, Haryana.

This makes it the first global university to set up a physical campus in India under the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) new regulations, aiming to make world-class education accessible to Indian students—right at home.

Under the Foreign Higher Educational Institutions (FHEI) guidelines of the UGC, foreign universities ranked among the Top 500 in the world are now allowed to establish campuses in India. Launched on July 16, 2025 by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini, held at the International Tech Park, Sector 59, Gurgaon. The campus is lauded as part of India’s vision under NEP 2020 to become a global knowledge hub and strengthen India–UK educational ties.

UK Degree Without Leaving India:

Students at the Gurgaon campus will earn a UK-recognized degree, identical to the one offered at the university’s UK campus. That means:

• Undergraduate Programs (4): BSc in Business Management, Accounting & Finance, Computer Science, Economics.

• Postgraduate Programs (2): MSc in Finance and MSc in International Management.

• Start Date & Student Intake: Around 170 students, with classes set to begin in August 2025. 

• Study Abroad Options: Students can spend up to one year at Southampton campuses in the UK or Malaysia.
